Joseph RiceSchool Safety and Security Coordinator/Student Services Supervisor Westmoreland Intermediate Unit (WIU7)

Joe began his career as a Catholic School teacher in a small elementary. At the time, he was also a sergeant in US Army Reserve. Having served for 11 years of both active and reserve, Joe was a natural choice to help establish school safety and security after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Joe became a principal and held that position at two different schools before becoming the School Safety and Security Coordinator for the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. In his role as principal, Joe became a certified ALiCE trainer and worked to help all of the schools in his diocese with school safety. Now, his role allows him to work all of the schools in his county. Joe became the School Safety and Security Coordinator for the WIU on July 1, 2021, and he has been developing this position ever since. As part of an Intermediate Unit, Joe is the liaison between the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the local school entities. He now provides resources, training, advice, and support to all of the schools in Westmoreland County.
