This session is designed to help K-12 teachers and administrators who are involved with Early College High Schools and dual credit programs assist students in safely making the transition from K-12 schools (where there is heavy reliance on school personnel for all aspects of safety) into the college environment (where students are generally completely autonomous, and in fact may engage in high-risk behaviors). It includes discussion about maturity levels, common perceptions and misconceptions about safety on college campuses, and key talking points about what parents and students might need to know.
Learning Objective 1: Attendees will be able to identify key differences between traditional K-12 students and early college and dual credit students when it comes to maturity and safety.
Learning Objective 2: Attendees will be able to identify situations that students might encounter as they make the transition to being a young college student.
Learning Objective 3: Attendees will be able to provide parents and students with useful information on how to prepare for this transition.
