Interim University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston Police Chief Puente brings a wealth of experience in municipal and university law enforcement, and in corporate security. He is highly regarded for his ability to identify and address operational vulnerabilities, reduce risk to organizations, mitigate the threat of workplace violence, prosecute internal fraud and implement strategic security technologies.
He joined the UT System Police in March 2012 as the Assistant Director of Police for the Office of Director of Police, Austin, TX and is a tenured law enforcement executive.
During his career, Interim Chief Puente has served and honorably retired from the Arlington, Texas, Police Department and held a command position with the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police. He entered the private corporate security sector as senior manager of corporate security with Frito Lay North America where he oversaw corporate security operations for 52,000 employees in 18 regional offices, 10 manufacturing plants and 200 distribution centers throughout the U.S. He also oversaw corporate security operations for the Office of the Baseball Commissioner of Major League Baseball, N.Y. N.Y. impacting the American and National Leagues and Minor Leagues operations. His executive leadership included planning sporting event security throughout North America to include contingency planning for end of season playoff games, World Series Games and “All-Star Game” events. In addition, he oversaw stadium security planning for Major League Baseball’s out-of-country International games in various countries to include Mexico, South America, Canada, Japan, the Dominical Republic, Columbia and Cuba during the off-seasons.
A graduate of the 210th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., Interim Chief Puente earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU) and a master’s degree in professional development from Dallas Baptist University (DBU). He completed advanced graduate studies in dispute resolution at SMU and did receive a certification as a court appointed mediator. He also is a graduate of several law enforcement executive management programs. Interim Chief Puente currently serves on the advisory board for the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration in Plano, Texas, and is an experienced Certified Fraud Examiner through the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Austin, TX.
