Lt. John Weinstein serves the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Police Department as a district commander, overseeing police operations on three campuses with over 40,000 students.
Before joining NOVA, he served as a chief of police and a deputy sheriff. He is a certified instructor in Verbal Judo, firearms, and active shooter tactical response and oversees NOVA’s training programs in these areas. A DCJS certified instructor, he teaches communications, firearms, officer survival, and patrol techniques at local police academies.
Weinstein also heads the NOVA Police Department’s community outreach program. In this capacity, he creates and distributes a monthly public safety newsletter that was awarded First Place in the Virginia Community College Association’s 2015 Excellence in Communications competition. Weinstein also conducted or oversaw over 200 public presentations and outreach events in all aspects of safety and security in 2015. Lt. Weinstein holds a Ph. D. in International Security Studies and is a nationally recognized expert in nuclear weapons command and control. He frequently contributes articles on community outreach and campus security issues to Campus Safety Magazine, and serves on its editorial board.
