We can no longer operate as if nothing will ever happen on our campuses. Institutions must be using situational awareness tactics to help identify individuals at risk and anticipate active threat scenarios. In this session, presenters will conduct a historical case review; summarize an FBI Active Shooter Report and shooter profile; discuss strategic concepts, barricade techniques and alternative emergency response methods; discuss truths and myths about firearms; consider structural hardening, site preparation and other dynamic threat considerations; and detail first responder issues for law enforcement officials and Fire/EMS personnel during active threat scenarios.
Learning Objective 1: Attendees will understand the importance of threat assessments and situational awareness.
Learning Objective 2: Attendees will understand the role of extremist ideologies in issues related to workplace violence and active threats and learn about the unique challenges of the ‘lone wolf’ attack scenario.
Learning Objective 3: Attendees will understand law enforcement response and mitigation strategies related to active threats in addition to Fire/EMS response challenges.
